Indian Railways under Suresh Prabhu: Highlights of his tenure
The railway minister, Suresh Prabhu, offered to leave his post by taking responsibility for the recent railway accidents. Here is an overview of his mandate and what he has taken over the last three years:
Accidents: Railways witnessed 346 accidents under Suresh Prabhu, which were commissioned by the Ministry of Railways in 2015. Since September 2015, there have been at least 28 major accidents. In total, 277 people were killed in these accidents.
The Minister of Railways published data after the Hirakhan Express accident earlier this year, according to which 1.42 lakh jobs for railway safety personnel have not been filled. Enormous concern.
Committee Report Anil Kakodkar: Prabhu has not implemented most of the Anil Kakodkar Railway Safety Committee report. The Committee was created under the UPA rule in 2012 by Dinesh Trivedi, then Minister of Railways. The Committee’s recommendations included the rapid replacement of current rakes by LHB’s safe and advanced coaches.
The report was submitted before the NDA came into power, but it did not attract the attention of the government. The special corpus of Rs 1 lakh crore recommended for railways was only approved in this year’s Rail Budget and it must be spent over a five year period.
Slow refurbishment of stations: Prabhu had proposed the redevelopment of 400 stations in PPP mode per year in its mandate. However, until May, the contracts for only two stations had been erased. The ministry’s P3 project has progressed at a slower pace than its other initiative.

Tatkal Service: The Tatkal railway service has recently been transformed. Passengers can now take advantage of the book-now-and-pay-later service on the IRCTC ticket booking portal. However, dynamic ticket pricing for some trains introduced into Tatkal’s reservations was an additional toll for passengers. The dynamic tariff system is the system by which ticket prices change according to the principle of surge pricing but subject to proportional ceilings.
Increased accessibility: Suresh Prabhu’s ministry, which hosts one of the largest daily passenger forces in the world, reduces turnaround times by massively increasing its social networks.
Introduction of the Tejas high-speed train: the Tejas high-speed train operates at a maximum operational speed of 130 km / h. The train is part of a project offering rail services such as high-speed WiFi, fast trips, digital entertainment setup and local kitchens.
Tejas trains are installed with 22 new features for the Indian Railways, including television screens behind the headrests and phone jacks for each passenger, LED panels for displaying information, sensor taps, organic toilets -vacuum with water level indicator, etc.
IRCTC Management Salons: Prabhu continued the plan to modernize the major Indian railway stations and upgrade them with swanky executive lounges was a key element of this project.
